This Hawaiian Alphabet Sampler, 150x150, is still the only Hawaiian alphabet sampler for counted cross stitch. The creation of the written Hawaiian language and its translation to English is portrayed by the five vowels and the revised seven consonants in the center panel. The sewing skills taught to the Hawaiian women, which later enabled them to evolve their own style of quilting are symbolized in the side panels. The picture below is the Mission Houses Museum of Honolulu, the hub of the missions established through the islands in the early 1800's. Traditional cross stitch as well as counted embroidery stitches. Color coded for DMC and Anchor Bates embroidery floss.
